Frequently asked questions

Terms and Conditions
What is changing?

We’re expanding our loyalty programme to better reward those who travel further. The current two-tier system (Level 1 and Level 2) is evolving into a four-tier structure: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Bronze and Silver reflect our existing levels, while Gold and Platinum offer even greater recognition for your loyalty. This change allows us to thank you in more meaningful ways.

How has my existing level been transferred to the new programme?

We’ve looked at your past five years of HX travel and calculated how many points you would have earned under the new structure. Based on that, we’ve placed you in the tier that best reflects your loyalty. No travel has been lost in the transition – your new tier and points balance will show where you stand.

How will these changes be communicated to us?

As an existing HX Explorer you should have received an email from us with the details of your new points balance and tier. If you have not received this from us please get in touch via email at [email protected]

Are my previous Hurtigruten cruises being honoured?

We understand that many of you have fond memories and a strong connection with Hurtigruten, and it’s important to acknowledge that part of your journey. HX and Hurtigruten are now fully separate companies and because of this, we’re unable to count Hurtigruten voyages toward your tier status in the new HX Explorers programme.

That said, we truly value the time and loyalty you’ve shown over the years. To recognise your past travels with Hurtigruten, we’re offering a one-off 100-point bonus to all HX Explorers who sailed with Hurtigruten within the last 5 years. This means you’ll still have a strong starting point in the new programme - no one with Hurtigruten travel in that timeframe will be placed below Silver tier.

Will I lose any of my previous benefits?

No, you’ll keep all your current benefits. In fact, many members will now enjoy additional perks thanks to the new programme.

We’ve worked hard to ensure all members retain at least their equivalent tier (Level 1 members became Bronze and Level 2 became at least Silver, even if you haven’t travelled with Hurtigruten or HX in the last 5 years). If it looks like you’ve been placed in a lower tier, please get in touch - we’ll review and correct it where needed.

Will we still get the 5% discount if we were Level 2 members previously?

Yes. If you were previously a Level 2 member, you’ll now be at least in the Silver tier - and the 5% booking discount continues.

Why is the loyalty programme changing from two to four tiers?

We wanted to ensure you’re recognised and rewarded in more meaningful ways, and to give you the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of travelling with HX on a deeper level - one that goes beyond a single voyage. By expanding the programme from two tiers to four, we’re creating more chances for you to feel valued throughout your journey with us. We hope this new structure sparks even more excitement around being part of HX Explorers.

How do I move up to a higher tier?

At launch, your points balance will be made up solely of your cruise nights with us over the past five years. These cruise nights form the foundation of your tier. While additional activities such as attending a webinar or taking the Polar Plunge are exciting parts of the programme, they will only begin to count from the launch date onwards - we’re unable to apply these retrospectively.

The main way to progress through the tiers is by travelling with us. For each night you spend in a standard cabin, you’ll earn 10 points, while a night in an Expedition or Darwin suite will earn you 15 points. That said, we know your connection to HX doesn’t end when you disembark. That’s why we’ve created ways to keep earning points even when you’re not onboard. You can boost your balance by completing our Antarctica University of Tasmania course or attending a live webinar or event. So, whether you’re sailing with us or staying engaged from home, there are plenty of ways to keep climbing up the tiers.

Will my past travel history count toward the new tier thresholds?

Yes - all HX cruises from the past five years have been reviewed and counted towards your points total. Hurtigruten cruises do not count, but Hurtigruten travellers will receive a 100-point bonus.

What are the new tiers called?

The four tiers are: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum - with Platinum as the highest.

How do I find out what tier I’m in?

You can find details of your membership number, tier and points balance at the top of each of our emails that we send to you. Otherwise, you can log into our website, travelhx.com, and view your details under the ‘My Account’ section.

How many points corresponds with each tier?

Each tier is based on your total points balance:

  • Bronze – 0 to 99 points

  • Silver – 100 to 349 points

  • Gold – 350 to 499 points

  • Platinum – 500+ points

You’ll move up automatically once your balance reaches the next tier threshold. Points can be earned through travel with us or by taking part in selected activities - so there are plenty of ways to progress.

Will my membership number change?

No - you’ll keep the same membership number, which links to both your bookings and your loyalty account.

Is there an option for a joint membership with family or travel companions?

Currently, we don’t offer joint or family memberships, even if you often travel with a companion. This is because many benefits, like the spa treatment available at the Gold tier, are awarded on an individual basis. Each HX Explorer has their own points to earn. So, if you travel together and want to enjoy the same perks - especially onboard - it’s best that everyone signs up individually to make sure no one misses out.

Do points have an expiry date?

Points are valid for seven years from the date they are earned. Your tier status is maintained as long as your qualifying points remain valid.

Will my tier reset annually or be reviewed periodically?

You can find details of your membership number, tier and points balance at the top of each of our emails that we send to you. Otherwise, you can log into our website, travelhx.com, and view your details under the ‘My Account’ section.

Can I opt out of the new loyalty programme?

Of course, you can opt out of the new loyalty programme if you prefer not to be part of HX Explorers and receive the benefits we offer. You can easily unsubscribe using the unsubscribe button at the bottom of any of our emails. Additionally, there’s an unsubscribe option available in our terms and conditions and in our FAQs here:

Unsubscribe | HX Hurtigruten Expeditions

If I opted out of the programme, but decide to rejoin can I reinstate my previous points and tiers?

Members that re-join the programme after cancelling previous membership will be reset to the programmes lowest entry level (Bronze) and any previous benefits or entitlements will not apply.

Will I be notified when I move up or down a tier?

Yes - we’ll notify you via email when your tier changes or if points are due to expire. You’ll also hear from us with updates, events, and exclusive news.

What happens if I’m right on the border between two tiers?

Until you reach the next points threshold, you’ll remain in your current tier - but you’re on your way to even more benefits.

Can I redeem my points to use as an onboard currency?

You cannot redeem your points as onboard currency. Instead, your points are used to determine your tier level, which in turn unlocks the range of benefits available to you. The points themselves aren’t spendable like money.

Where can I find more information about my HX Explorers membership and how can I track my progress?

Your tier and points balance will be visible at the top of each email sent to you by HX or HX Explorers. You can also find our membership details under My Account on our website.

Will the changes affect my existing bookings or rewards?

No, there will be no impact to your booking if you have previously used the HX Explorers offers as a Level 1 or Level 2 member. Whilst all our existing HX Explorers have been allocated a new tier you’ll keep all your current benefits, and some members will now enjoy additional perks thanks to the new programme that can be used on your next HX expedition.

Is there a dedicated HX Explorers email address that we can reach out to if we have any further questions?

Yes, for any questions related to the HX Explorers programme please email [email protected].

I’m having trouble seeing my tier/points online - what should I do?

You can also find your tier status at the top of any email sent to you by HX or HX Explorers. If you are having trouble accessing your online account, please get in touch via [email protected].

Will the website or app be updated with these changes?

The website will be updated with these changes and these FAQs will remain available on the web. The APP will link to our website where you can access the same information.

When will I receive my points?

Your points earned from travel with us, as well as from any other activities that accumulate points, will be calculated and reflected in your points balance within up to 30 days after they are earned. This means that points from the trip you are currently on won’t be available to use, nor will any benefits be redeemable during that same trip. Similarly, any points earned outside of travel - such as from special events or courses - will also take up to 30 days to appear in your balance.

Are there other ways of earning points outside of travel?

Yes, we wanted to make sure your HX Explorers experience didn’t end as soon as your onboard journey did. That’s why we have included several ways of earning points whilst at home/not onboard. These kinds of elements included; completion of the Antarctica University of Tasmania course, signing up to our newsletters, or attending a HX webinar live. These extras may grow and expand as our loyalty programme does but for now – this gives you a chance to earn from afar. Full details can be found on our HX Explorers homepage on the website.

Are pre/post nights organised by HX included in point accumulation?

No, the nights that add to your points total are cruise nights. In this way, pre and post nights, even if they’re organised by HX – do not count towards point accumulation.

Is it only the lead booker who will get points? What about if you always travel with a travel companion?

While the lead is the one who books the trip, points aren’t limited to just them. If you and your travel companion both have HX Explorers memberships and your accounts are linked to the booking, you’ll both earn the same number of points for the nights you stay onboard.

What does onboard spend include or exclude?

5 HX Explorer Points are issued for every 250 EUR (net of taxes) spent onboard a cruise by a member, these points will be issued to all members in the same cabin, regardless of who spent the money or who pays. The transaction may be made by cash or card.

Onboard spend/credit issued by HX and gratuities do not count toward the Onboard Spend amount.  If a member chooses to upgrade onboard the ship that spend is also included in the total that earns points and will not be counted in Suite cabin points.

What are the additional benefits?

Please find all our new benefits by tier on our HX Explorers homepage on the website.

How does the room upgrade work for Platinum tier?

If you’re a Platinum-tier HX Explorer, you may be eligible for a complimentary room upgrade - but it’s important to note that this is subject to availability. Factors like your voyage, ship, and cabin capacity all play a role.

We’ll let you know if you qualify around 30 days before departure, and if so, you’ll be upgraded above the category you originally booked. For example, if you’re travelling on MS Fridtjof Nansen in a Polar Outside cabin, you may be upgraded to an Arctic Superior cabin at no extra cost.

While we’ll always do our best to honour this benefit, we hope you understand that availability can vary depending on the sailing.

What if my cabin was upgraded and my sailing has now been cancelled?

We will do everything possible to accommodate you in the same upgraded cabin on your next sailing but please note this will be subject to availability and it’s not always possible.

Can I gift or transfer my tier benefits to someone else?

No, you cannot transfer your benefits or points to anyone else. They are earned on an individual basis and do not act as a currency but rather an indication on where your loyalty is rewarded within the tiers.

Benefits such as the complimentary spa treatment cannot be exchanged, transferred to another traveller or refunded if not used.

Will the new tiers include onboard recognition or privileges?

Yes, you can enjoy benefits onboard our ships. Please see the benefits table for details of the onboard benefits by tier.

Will HX introduce more tiers or changes in the future?

There are currently no plans to change the programme, however we will always be open to optimising the customer experience therefore there could be changes in the future.

Can points be used to pay for future bookings or add-ons?

No, our points system is not a currency that can be redeemed or exchanged. It is simply an indication on where your loyalty is rewarded within the tiers.

Do solo travellers earn the same number of points?

Yes, there is no joint benefits so all guests solo or travelling together will have their own points linked to their individual HX Explorers loyalty membership.

Will all benefits be available immediately upon reaching a new tier?

Once your points have been added and your new tier is visible in your account, your benefits will be ready to use. However, please note that it can take up to 30 days for all points to appear in your HX Explorers account.

This means that any points earned from the trip you’re currently on - or from activities like special events or courses - won’t be updated straight away, and you won’t be able to enjoy new tier benefits during that same trip.

Who can I contact if I have a query related to my points or tier?

We have a dedicated HX Explorers team on hand to help with any queries about your points, tier or wider membership. Please email [email protected] and the team will respond to you as quickly as possible.
