HX Greenland Promise
What is the HX Greenland Promise?
The HX Greenland Promise is our way of making Greenland easier to book with confidence. If, in the highly unlikely event, we cancel your voyage, or your government advises against travel, you’ll have flexible options to continue your plans.
What options do I have if my Greenland voyage is cancelled?
If HX cancels your voyage, or your government advises against travel, you can choose to:
Move to another HX expedition and receive a free additional 20% Future Cruise Credit on top of what you’ve already paid towards your Greenland expedition, or
Receive a full refund of all monies paid to HX.
What is the free additional 20% Future Cruise Credit?
Future Cruise Credit is an extra 20% credit added at no cost, on top of the money you’ve already paid towards your Greenland expedition (based on your original cruise fare, excluding optional extras).
If you choose to rebook, your original payments transfer across, and the additional 20% is added as a bonus towards your new booking. This credit can be used towards any HX expedition, in any destination.
Example: If your cruise fare is €10,000, you’ll receive €2,000 in additional credit, giving you €12,000 total to put towards a new HX expedition.
What happens to the money I’ve already paid?
Any payments you’ve made to HX, including optional flights, hotels, transfers, excursions, add-ons and extras, will be transferred to your new booking once you accept the Future Cruise Credit.
How long do I have to use my Future Cruise Credit?
Your Future Cruise Credit must be:
Redeemed within 90 days of being issued, and
Used for a new HX voyage departing within 18 months of the issue date.
Which voyages are covered by the HX Greenland Promise?
The Promise applies to selected 2026 & 2027 HX voyages where Greenland is included in the itinerary, including voyages where Greenland is one destination among several.
What if I prefer a refund instead?
If Future Cruise Credit doesn’t suit your plans, you can choose a 100% refund of all monies paid directly to HX.
Where can I find the full Terms & Conditions?
Full Terms & Conditions, including details on Future Cruise Credit redemption, can be found at Your HX Greenland Promise.
Clothing & Equipment
Will we receive a packing list?
Yes. You’ll receive a detailed packing list in your travel documents, which will be sent approximately two months before your trip.
Will we receive a jacket on board?
Yes. All guests travelling to Greenland with HX receive our high-quality blue expedition jacket. It is wind- and water-resistant, sustainably produced, made from recycled materials, and available in sizes XS–XXXL. You may also try on different sizes onboard, and if you already own an HX jacket, you’ll receive onboard credit upon presenting it during check-in.
Is the jacket warm enough? Should I bring extra layers?
The jacket is high-quality, windproof, and waterproof. However, we highly recommend bringing additional warm layers (for example: wool or insulated mid-layers) as temperatures can vary. Packing layers ensures comfort in changing conditions.
Is a thermal or insulating jacket listed in the packing guide separate from the HX jacket?
Yes. The HX expedition jacket is your outer shell — wind and water resistant, but not heavily insulated. The thermal or insulating jacket on your packing list refers to a mid-layer that you wear underneath. Think of the two layers working together: warmth from the mid-layer, protection from the elements from the HX shell.
Are waterproof trousers required?
Yes. Waterproof trousers are mandatory for all guests. Whether you are heading ashore by Zodiac or hiking across Greenlandic terrain, reliable waterproof trousers are an essential part of your expedition kit. Layering beneath them is equally important — conditions in Greenland can change quickly and the cold is best managed in layers rather than bulk.
I already own insulated expedition trousers from a previous polar trip. Should I bring them to Greenland?
Yes. If you have high-performance insulated trousers — such as those used in Antarctica or Svalbard — they are well worth packing. Temperatures can drop significantly, particularly in the morning and evening, and what served you in polar regions will serve you equally well here.
What should I wear in Greenland?
Layering is key to staying comfortable in Greenland’s variable conditions. We recommend thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer such as a fleece or sweater, and a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Waterproof trousers are essential, especially for Zodiac rides and landings. Avoid wearing only synthetics as they trap moisture and can make you feel colder.
What if I’m allergic to wool?
If you’re allergic to wool, natural fibres like cotton or bamboo are great alternatives. Bamboo has similar insulating properties to wool, while cotton provides comfort. Try to avoid synthetic materials, as they can trap moisture and make you feel cold.
What type of gloves are best?
A combination of thin liner gloves and thicker wind- and waterproof gloves works best. This allows you to adjust layers depending on the conditions while keeping your hands warm and dry.
Do I need a hat?
Yes. A well-fitting hat is recommended, ideally with a chin strap to prevent it from blowing away. Because of the strong sunlight, some guests prefer a peaked hat to protect their face from the sun.
What footwear should I bring?
Comfortable, flat shoes for everyday use on board. Decks can be slippery, so shoes with good grip are recommended.
Sandals or slip-on shoes for walking inside the ship.
Sturdy hiking boots with good grip for hikes and community visits.
Waterproof rubber boots are required for all nature landings. These will be loaned to you for the duration of your expedition and include adjustable calf options. Available sizes: EU 32–50 / US 1–18 / UK 1–15.
Do I need hiking boots?
Yes. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended, as many landings involve uneven terrain, tundra, or rocky trails.
Will I need crampons or hiking spikes?
No. Crampons or hiking spikes are not required for our Greenland expeditions. Your HX-provided rubber boots and standard hiking footwear are sufficient for the terrain you will encounter.
Are rubber boots mandatory, or can I wear my own hiking boots ashore?
It depends on the type of landing. On wet landings — where you disembark from a Zodiac and may step through shallow water at the shore — rubber boots are mandatory. In community ports, where you arrive by tender boat and step onto a jetty or pier, you are welcome to wear your own walking shoes. For East Greenland specifically, all landings are wet, so rubber boots are required throughout. For West and Northwest Greenland, rubber boots apply to wet landings only; your own footwear is permitted on jetty and pier arrivals.
Once I'm wearing rubber boots for a landing, can I switch to walking shoes once ashore?
No. You cannot switch footwear during the same landing. The Expedition Team will advise before each excursion whether rubber boots or your own shoes are appropriate for that day's landing. Plan accordingly before you step off the Zodiac.
I have a medical condition affecting my calves or feet. Can I bring my own boots?
Yes, in cases where HX-provided boots cannot accommodate a medical condition — such as larger calves or lymphoedema — you may bring your own muck boots. They must meet biosecurity requirements and be cleaned with Virkon solution before any landing. Please notify the Expedition Leader or Assistant Expedition Leader when you board, and carry a medical certificate if possible. If specialist walking shoes are required for hiking, discuss this with the Expedition Leader on embarkation — arrangements depend on conditions at each landing. Note that there is no facility to leave boots at the landing site, so you may need to carry them with you if switching footwear.
Can you recommend brands for waterproof gloves or trousers?
We don’t recommend specific brands but suggest high-quality ski gloves and durable waterproof trousers for best protection and comfort.
Can we bring walking sticks on board?
Yes. You’re welcome to bring your own walking sticks. We also provide walking sticks for all guests on every landing, and the Expedition Team will take them ashore for you.
Can I bring a waterproof case for my phone?
Yes. A waterproof case helps protect your phone from splashes during Zodiac rides. A neck strap is also recommended for added safety and convenience.
Do I need to bring binoculars?
Yes. Bringing binoculars will help you get the most out of Greenland’s incredible wildlife and landscapes. We recommend models with 8x or 10x magnification and an objective lens size of 32 mm or 42 mm.
What equipment is provided for kayaking? Do I need to bring anything specific?
All kayaking equipment is provided onboard. In terms of your own clothing, layering is essential — waterproof trousers (which you will already have as part of your mandatory kit) are ideal. No prior kayaking experience is necessary, though you will need to be a competent swimmer and be able to follow simple directional instructions in English.
Is a mosquito net necessary?
In certain destinations and at certain times of the season, mosquitoes can be present. A head-net — worn over your hat or hood — is a practical addition to your kit. Mosquitoes typically peak earlier in the Greenland season and are less prevalent by September, though some will likely still be around.

No, the onboard medical facility does not supply prescribed medication. It’s important to pack enough of your prescribed medicine to cover the entire length of your trip.
Do I need to do a medical before travelling?
No, this is not required for your trip to Greenland.
I need to keep medication refrigerated. What are my options?
On many ships, a small minibar fridge in your cabin will be enough. If your cabin doesn’t have one, or if you have a larger supply that won’t fit, the medical centre can store it for you securely.
Is travel insurance absolutely necessary?
It is not mandatory; however, we highly recommend comprehensive travel and health insurance. We would advise that your policy should include medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, with a minimum recommended coverage amount of $200,000.

Weather, Culture & Environmental Factors
What are the typical daily temperatures in Greenland at this time of year?
Temperatures in Greenland typically range from 0°C to 15°C during the summer months. On calm, sunny days, it can feel warmer than expected due to the dry air, especially when there's no wind. However, the weather can shift quickly and unpredictably. Dressing in layers is essential to stay comfortable in changing conditions.
Is it possible to see the Northern Lights?
Yes. Northern Lights in Greenland typically appear between October and March. From late September, there is a small chance of sightings, especially in the northern regions of Greenland or on late-season voyages to Northeast Greenland National Park or Scoresby Sund.
Are there any cultural “dos and don’ts” when visiting Greenland?
Yes. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, children, private homes, or culturally important events. Be open, patient, and curious. Avoid criticizing local lifestyles, wandering into private areas, or walking between houses or near drying racks without guidance.
Is it okay to take photos of local people or communities?
Yes - but only with permission. Always ask before photographing individuals, children, private homes, or cultural activities. Respect for privacy and local customs is essential.
Are there important customs or traditions I should know about?
Yes. Many communities still celebrate Inuit traditions such as drum dancing, storytelling, and kaffemik - an open-house gathering where visitors are welcomed with coffee, cake, and local foods. These are meaningful cultural experiences and an important part of the communities we visit.
Where can I track whale sightings?
You can use happywhale.com or the HappyWhale App, which works onboard and can be used with our Science Team.
