Greenland Expedition - FAQs

Everything you need to know about exploring Greenland with HX — from booking with confidence to navigating the unexpected. Your questions, answered.

HX Greenland Promise

What is the HX Greenland Promise?

The HX Greenland Promise is our way of making Greenland easier to book with confidence. If, in the highly unlikely event, we cancel your voyage, or your government advises against travel, you’ll have flexible options to continue your plans.

What options do I have if my Greenland voyage is cancelled?

If HX cancels your voyage, or your government advises against travel, you can choose to:

  • Move to another HX expedition and receive a free additional 20% Future Cruise Credit on top of what you’ve already paid towards your Greenland expedition, or

  • Receive a full refund of all monies paid to HX.

What is the free additional 20% Future Cruise Credit?

Future Cruise Credit is an extra 20% credit added at no cost, on top of the money you’ve already paid towards your Greenland expedition (based on your original cruise fare, excluding optional extras).

If you choose to rebook, your original payments transfer across, and the additional 20% is added as a bonus towards your new booking. This credit can be used towards any HX expedition, in any destination.

Example: If your cruise fare is €10,000, you’ll receive €2,000 in additional credit, giving you €12,000 total to put towards a new HX expedition.

What happens to the money I’ve already paid?

Any payments you’ve made to HX, including optional flights, hotels, transfers, excursions, add-ons and extras, will be transferred to your new booking once you accept the Future Cruise Credit.

How long do I have to use my Future Cruise Credit?

Your Future Cruise Credit must be:

  • Redeemed within 90 days of being issued, and

  • Used for a new HX voyage departing within 18 months of the issue date.

Which voyages are covered by the HX Greenland Promise?

The Promise applies to selected 2026 & 2027 HX voyages where Greenland is included in the itinerary, including voyages where Greenland is one destination among several.

What if I prefer a refund instead?

If Future Cruise Credit doesn’t suit your plans, you can choose a 100% refund of all monies paid directly to HX.

Where can I find the full Terms & Conditions?

Full Terms & Conditions, including details on Future Cruise Credit redemption, can be found at Your HX Greenland Promise.

Embarkation & Pre-Cruise

What time can I board the ship?

Check-in opens at 15:00. If you are joining in Reykjavik, embarkation typically begins between 15:00 and 16:00 — please refer to your travel documents for the confirmed time. If you arrive earlier, you are welcome to drop your luggage at the port and explore the city.

I arrive in Nuuk in the morning — what happens before boarding?

For guests arriving early on embarkation day, we have arranged a guided activity and lunch between your arrival and boarding time (approximately 15:00). There is no need to wait at the airport or port — you will be well looked after from the moment you land.

Is a pre-cruise hotel included?

For guests departing from Copenhagen, an overnight hotel stay before your flight to Nuuk is included. For guests on specific gateways, please confirm the inclusions within your travel documents or contact our team. Guests joining in Nuuk will be provided with a hotel, dinner, and a guided activity on the day before boarding.

Flights & Luggage

What is the baggage allowance for flights to and from Greenland?

The allowance on Air Greenland and on flights between Iceland and Nuuk is 23 kg for checked baggage (which can be spread across multiple bags as long as the combined weight does not exceed 23 kg per person) plus 8 kg carry-on.

What are the flight times from Newark (EWR) to Nuuk (GOH)?

Newark to Nuuk (GOH) departs at 11:20 and arrives at 18:45, operated by United Airlines. The return departs Nuuk at 09:45 and arrives Newark at 11:20.

What are the flight times from Keflavik (KEF) to Nuuk (GOH)?

Keflavik to Nuuk departs approximately 16:30 and arrives at 17:30. The return from Nuuk departs at 10:50 and arrives Keflavik at 13:50. Please confirm your specific dates with your booking documents.

When will I receive my flight details?

Full flight information is included within your travel documents. A comprehensive, personalised itinerary — including flights, transfers, and excursion details — is sent approximately 30–40 days before departure. If you are within five days of sailing and have not yet received this, please contact our customer service team with your booking number.

What to Pack & Wear

Will we receive a packing list?

Yes. You’ll receive a detailed packing list in your travel documents, which will be sent approximately two months before your trip.

Will I be provided with an HX expedition jacket, and is it waterproof?

The HX expedition jacket is included as part of your voyage — there is no additional charge. It is windproof and water-resistant, designed to perform as a shell layer in expedition conditions, and available in sizes XS–XXXL. It is not a standalone insulated jacket, so we recommend packing thermal mid-layers to wear underneath. If you already own an HX jacket from a previous expedition and prefer not to take a new one, you will receive a €45 onboard credit to use as you wish.

Is the jacket warm enough? Should I bring extra layers?

The jacket is high-quality, windproof, and waterproof. However, we highly recommend bringing additional warm layers (for example: wool or insulated mid-layers) as temperatures can vary. Packing layers ensures comfort in changing conditions.

Is a thermal or insulating jacket listed in the packing guide separate from the HX jacket?

Yes. The HX expedition jacket is your outer shell — wind and water resistant, but not heavily insulated. The thermal or insulating jacket on your packing list refers to a mid-layer that you wear underneath. Think of the two layers working together: warmth from the mid-layer, protection from the elements from the HX shell.

Are waterproof trousers required?

Yes. Waterproof trousers are mandatory for all guests. Whether you are heading ashore by Zodiac or hiking across Greenlandic terrain, reliable waterproof trousers are an essential part of your expedition kit. Layering beneath them is equally important — conditions in Greenland can change quickly and the cold is best managed in layers rather than bulk.

I already own insulated expedition trousers from a previous polar trip. Should I bring them to Greenland?

Yes. If you have high-performance insulated trousers — such as those used in Antarctica or Svalbard — they are well worth packing. Temperatures can drop significantly, particularly in the morning and evening, and what served you in polar regions will serve you equally well here.

What should I wear in Greenland?

Layering is key to staying comfortable in Greenland’s variable conditions. We recommend thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer such as a fleece or sweater, and a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Waterproof trousers are essential, especially for Zodiac rides and landings. Avoid wearing only synthetics as they trap moisture and can make you feel colder.

What if I’m allergic to wool?

If you’re allergic to wool, natural fibres like cotton or bamboo are great alternatives. Bamboo has similar insulating properties to wool, while cotton provides comfort. Try to avoid synthetic materials, as they can trap moisture and make you feel cold.

What type of gloves are best?

A combination of thin liner gloves and thicker wind- and waterproof gloves works best. This allows you to adjust layers depending on the conditions while keeping your hands warm and dry.

Do I need a hat?

Yes. A well-fitting hat is recommended, ideally with a chin strap to prevent it from blowing away. Because of the strong sunlight, some guests prefer a peaked hat to protect their face from the sun.

What footwear should I bring?

  • Comfortable, flat shoes for everyday use on board. Decks can be slippery, so shoes with good grip are recommended.

  • Sandals or slip-on shoes for walking inside the ship.

  • Sturdy hiking boots with good grip for hikes and community visits.

  • Waterproof rubber boots are required for all nature landings. These will be loaned to you for the duration of your expedition and include adjustable calf options.

Do I need hiking boots?

Yes. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended, as many landings involve uneven terrain, tundra, or rocky trails.

Will I need crampons or hiking spikes?

No. Crampons or hiking spikes are not required for our Greenland expeditions. Your HX-provided rubber boots and standard hiking footwear are sufficient for the terrain you will encounter.

Are rubber boots mandatory, or can I wear my own hiking boots ashore?

It depends on the type of landing. On wet landings — where you disembark from a Zodiac and may step through shallow water at the shore — rubber boots are mandatory. In community ports, where you arrive by tender boat and step onto a jetty or pier, you are welcome to wear your own walking shoes. For East Greenland specifically, all landings are wet, so rubber boots are required throughout. For West and Northwest Greenland, rubber boots apply to wet landings only; your own footwear is permitted on jetty and pier arrivals.

Once I'm wearing rubber boots for a landing, can I switch to walking shoes once ashore?

No. You cannot switch footwear during the same landing. The Expedition Team will advise before each excursion whether rubber boots or your own shoes are appropriate for that day's landing. Plan accordingly before you step off the Zodiac.

I have a medical condition affecting my calves or feet. Can I bring my own boots?

Yes, in cases where HX-provided boots cannot accommodate a medical condition — such as larger calves or lymphoedema — you may bring your own muck boots. They must meet biosecurity requirements and be cleaned with Virkon solution before any landing. Please notify the Expedition Leader or Assistant Expedition Leader when you board, and carry a medical certificate if possible. If specialist walking shoes are required for hiking, discuss this with the Expedition Leader on embarkation — arrangements depend on conditions at each landing. Note that there is no facility to leave boots at the landing site, so you may need to carry them with you if switching footwear.

Can you recommend brands for waterproof gloves or trousers?

We don’t recommend specific brands but suggest high-quality ski gloves and durable waterproof trousers for best protection and comfort.

Can we bring walking sticks on board?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring your own walking sticks. We also provide walking sticks for all guests on every landing, and the Expedition Team will take them ashore for you.

Can I bring a waterproof case for my phone?

Yes. A waterproof case helps protect your phone from splashes during Zodiac rides. A neck strap is also recommended for added safety and convenience.

Do I need to bring binoculars?

Yes. Bringing binoculars will help you get the most out of Greenland’s incredible wildlife and landscapes. We recommend models with 8x or 10x magnification and an objective lens size of 32 mm or 42 mm.

What equipment is provided for kayaking? Do I need to bring anything specific?

All kayaking equipment is provided onboard. In terms of your own clothing, layering is essential — waterproof trousers (which you will already have as part of your mandatory kit) are ideal. No prior kayaking experience is necessary, though you will need to be a competent swimmer and be able to follow simple directional instructions in English.

Is a mosquito net necessary?

In certain destinations and at certain times of the season, mosquitoes can be present. A head-net — worn over your hat or hood — is a practical addition to your kit. Mosquitoes typically peak earlier in the Greenland season and are less prevalent by September, though some will likely still be around.

General Trip Logistics

Is ground transportation included?

This depends on the package you have booked. Please always check your personal itinerary, and if you’re not sure, contact our local customer service centre and someone will be happy to help.

How do we book an airport transfer?

Please contact our customer service team for details regarding airport transfers.

Can I guarantee early check-in at the hotel?

Yes. To guarantee an early check-in, you must request this in advance through us, and it will incur an additional charge.

Can I bring my own alcoholic beverages onboard?

No, only alcohol from our bar, restaurants, and cabin mini bars can be consumed onboard. If you bring alcohol with you, please hand it to our crew during embarkation, and they’ll return it to you on the final day of the sailing. However, with our all-inclusive service, there's no need to worry!

Are there non-alcoholic options on board?

Yes, we offer a selection of non-alcoholic wines and beers, as well as a wide range of soft drinks, teas, and coffees.

Will I need certain visas?

Remember to bring your passport, regardless of your nationality. Your passport must remain valid for at least six months after disembarkation. It’s your responsibility to obtain any visas and travel documents required by the countries you visit during your trip. Please check your travel documents, as visa information will be included.

Excursions & Activities

Can I book excursions before I travel, or only once onboard?

Optional paid shore excursions can be booked in advance through our online portal, and we recommend doing so for activities with limited capacity, as popular excursions can sell out. Most excursions can also be booked onboard. Included excursions and kayaking can only be booked onboard — these do not require advance reservation.

What happens if an optional excursion conflicts with an included one on the same day?

The Expedition Team onboard will do everything possible to accommodate both. However, in cases where the timings genuinely conflict and a choice must be made, the optional excursion will take priority and the included excursion will be cancelled. If this is a concern, speak with the team onboard and they will work through the options with you.

Is the sightseeing flight in Ilulissat by plane or helicopter?

The UNESCO flight in Ilulissat is operated by plane — a 60-minute scenic flight. This has not changed. We do not currently offer helicopter tours in our Greenland programme.

Is the traditional animal skin processing workshop bookable in advance?

Yes. This is a locally operated, shore-based experience and is available for pre-booking through our excursions portal. If you have had difficulty booking due to system issues, please contact our team directly and we will assist. Kayaking, by contrast, is booked exclusively onboard.

Is there a complimentary shuttle to the Ilulissat Ice Fjord Centre?

Yes. We have arranged a complimentary shuttle to the IceFjord Centre as part of the included experience in Ilulissat. Local guides will be present to bring the history of the place to life, and complimentary refreshments are provided. No pre-booking is required.

What time does the last tender leave Ilulissat in the evening?

Our scheduled departure from Ilulissat is typically at 18:00, with the last tender departing around 17:00–17:15. Please confirm exact timings onboard, as these are subject to change depending on weather and ice conditions.

Are there enough places for everyone on the included excursions?

Yes. Every guest will have the opportunity to participate in at least one included activity at each port of call. Zodiac groups typically accommodate 10–12 guests per boat, so you will be well looked after throughout.

Greenlandic Cuisine Onboard

Will there be a Greenlandic chef onboard?

Yes. Each season, we bring award-winning Greenlandic chefs aboard our ships to offer guests an authentic taste of the destination. The chefs for the current season are as follows:

  • Laasi Biilmann

  • Jørgine Tobiassen

  • Eli Nuka Johansson

Please note that Greenlandic guest chefs are not present on the Arctic Canada / West Greenland voyage.

Onboard Facilities & Services

Is there a dress code for dinner?

The overall dress code on board is casual and comfortable, so you can wear whatever you feel best in at dinner. There’s no formal dress requirement - just be sure to pack a pair of shoes suitable for walking around the ship.

Will there be regional dishes available onboard to taste?

Yes, at our Aune restaurant, our menus feature regional dishes, crafted with local ingredients where possible. This allows you to enjoy the authentic flavours of the areas you visit during your voyage.

Is WiFi complimentary?

Yes, WiFi is complimentary and available throughout the ship. However, connectivity may be limited due to the remote areas we explore. We recommend completing any phone updates and downloading apps and media before boarding the ship.

Is there a shop onboard?

Yes, there is an onboard shop that offers a range of products, including clothing, souvenirs, books, and travel essentials.

Are drones allowed on the ship or during excursions?

Unfortunately, drones are not allowed either on the ship or during excursions and activities off the ship.

What types of card payments are accepted onboard?

The ship accepts Visa, MasterCard, and AMEX for onboard purchases. However, thanks to the all-inclusive nature of your voyage, most of your needs are already covered!

Can I tip onboard servers?

Tipping is not expected at HX, as service charges are not added to your bill. If you wish to thank the crew, you can leave a tip at Reception or in the tipping box. Collected tips are shared among crew members, but please do not tip individuals. Officers and the Expedition Team are excluded from this.

Is there a bar on board, and is alcohol charged separately?

Yes, there is a bar onboard. Our expeditions are all-inclusive, meaning most drinks are free. Some selected premium drinks are available for an additional cost.

Is there a professional photographer on board who shares their photos?

Yes, we have an onboard photographer on every expedition. They share a selection of photos in your HX Logbook, which you’ll receive after returning home.

Is there laundry service on board?

Laundry facilities and services vary slightly by ship:

  • MS Fridtjof Nansen: Laundry service is available for an additional cost (per item). A next-day service is standard, with an express same-day option. Suite guests have one complimentary laundry bag per day included.

  • MS Fram & MS Spitsbergen: Laundry service is available for an additional cost. There are no self-service facilities on any ship.

What kind of power sockets are used on board?

Power sockets are standard European 220V two-pin outlets. We recommend bringing an adaptor if your devices use a different plug type.

Are there wellness facilities on board?

Wellness facilities differ slightly by ship:

  • MS Fridtjof Nansen: Features a gym, sauna, hot tubs, and infinity pools.

  • MS Fram: Includes a gym, sauna, and hot tub.

  • MS Spitsbergen: Features a gym, sauna, and hot tub.

Currency & Payments

What currency should I bring to Greenland?

Danish Krone (DKK) is the recommended currency, particularly if you plan to purchase souvenirs or visit markets in smaller communities. While major credit cards are accepted in most shops and larger towns, many smaller settlements and local markets operate on cash only and may not accept Euros. We recommend exchanging to DKK before you travel — either in Copenhagen (ideal if you are transiting through) or in your home country — as banking and exchange facilities in Greenland are limited.

Is there an ATM available in Greenland?

The only ATM currently operating at a Greenland airport is located at Nuuk Airport. ATMs are available in some of the larger towns, but cannot be relied upon in smaller communities. Planning ahead and carrying DKK cash is the most reliable approach.

Can I use Euros in small communities?

In most cases, no. Smaller communities and local markets typically accept DKK cash only. Euros are not widely exchangeable in these areas, so we strongly recommend carrying DKK if you intend to shop locally.

Can I exchange currency or pay my ship bill in DKK or Krone onboard?

The ship operates as a cashless environment. The onboard currency is Euros, accepted by card. DKK cannot be used for onboard purchases, and currency exchange is not available on the ship.

Health, Safety & Medical

What onboard medical facilities are available?

There is a medical centre staffed with one doctor and at least one nurse.

Does the onboard medical facility provide prescribed medication?

No, the onboard medical facility does not supply prescribed medication. It’s important to pack enough of your prescribed medicine to cover the entire length of your trip.

Do I need to do a medical before travelling?

No, this is not required for your trip to Greenland.

I need to keep medication refrigerated. What are my options?

On many ships, a small minibar fridge in your cabin will be enough. If your cabin doesn’t have one, or if you have a larger supply that won’t fit, the medical centre can store it for you securely.

Is travel insurance absolutely necessary?

It is not mandatory; however, we highly recommend comprehensive travel and health insurance. We would advise that your policy should include medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, with a minimum recommended coverage amount of $200,000.

Social & Communication

Is there a way for solo travellers to mix with fellow solo travellers?

Yes, we have a ‘welcome’ event for solo travellers, typically on the first or second day on board. There are solo tables during both lunch and dinner, and the head waiter will accommodate any requests.

What kind of social atmosphere can solo travellers expect onboard?

HX fosters a warm and welcoming community for solo travellers, with flexible dining arrangements and opportunities to socialise or enjoy solitude as preferred.

What about onboard connectivity?

WiFi is available most of the time but may slow or drop in remote areas. Short videos can usually be viewed.

Destination & Wildlife

What languages are spoken in Greenland?

The official languages are Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) and Danish. In larger towns such as Nuuk, Ilulissat, and Sisimiut, English is spoken reasonably widely. In smaller, more remote communities, Kalaallisut and Danish are predominantly spoken and English may not be understood. Our Expedition Team will always be on hand to bridge any communication gaps.

What time zone does western Greenland operate on?

Western Greenland observes Western Greenland Summer Time (WGST), which is UTC−2 during the summer season.

Can I see the Northern Lights on a Greenland expedition?

Not during the summer season. On our June, July, and August departures, the near-continuous daylight means the Northern Lights cannot be seen. Toward mid-September, as darkness begins to return, there is a possibility of seeing them on our East Greenland voyages or on the Amundsen voyage covering West Greenland and Newfoundland. If witnessing the Northern Lights is a priority for you, we recommend exploring our late-season departures.

Are beluga whales found in Greenlandic waters?

Belugas are present in Greenland, predominantly along the western coastline during winter and spring. Summer sightings are uncommon, as belugas migrate to Arctic Canada during this period to mate and give birth. While not guaranteed on summer voyages, other cetaceans — including humpback, fin, and minke whales — are regularly encountered in Greenlandic waters.

Are mosquitoes a problem in Greenland?

Mosquitoes are most prevalent in the earlier part of the Greenland season. By September, numbers reduce significantly, though some will likely still be present. We recommend packing a lightweight head-net as a precaution, particularly if you are sensitive to insect bites.

How do the landings in Greenland compare to those in Svalbard?

The landings in Greenland are broadly comparable in terms of the physical demands and skills required — you will encounter similar Zodiac operations and terrain. What sets Greenland apart is the cultural dimension: community landings bring you directly into contact with local Greenlandic life, adding a layer to the experience that is distinct from the more nature-focused landings of Svalbard.

What can I expect from East Greenland landings? Will we visit any communities?

East Greenland is overwhelmingly expedition-led — expect nature landings, small-boat cruising, and kayaking across remote and dramatic scenery, all shaped by the conditions on the day. The one scheduled community visit is Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote inhabited settlements on Earth, where a full day of locally guided activities is planned. For all East Greenland landings, rubber boots are mandatory as all disembarkations are wet.

Weather, Culture & Environmental Factors

What are the typical daily temperatures in Greenland at this time of year?

Temperatures in Greenland typically range from 0°C to 15°C during the summer months. On calm, sunny days, it can feel warmer than expected due to the dry air, especially when there's no wind. However, the weather can shift quickly and unpredictably. Dressing in layers is essential to stay comfortable in changing conditions.

Is it possible to see the Northern Lights?

Yes. Northern Lights in Greenland typically appear between October and March. From late September, there is a small chance of sightings, especially in the northern regions of Greenland or on late-season voyages to Northeast Greenland National Park or Scoresby Sund.

Are there any cultural “dos and don’ts” when visiting Greenland?

Yes. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, children, private homes, or culturally important events. Be open, patient, and curious. Avoid criticizing local lifestyles, wandering into private areas, or walking between houses or near drying racks without guidance.

Is it okay to take photos of local people or communities?

Yes - but only with permission. Always ask before photographing individuals, children, private homes, or cultural activities. Respect for privacy and local customs is essential.

Are there important customs or traditions I should know about?

Yes. Many communities still celebrate Inuit traditions such as drum dancing, storytelling, and kaffemik - an open-house gathering where visitors are welcomed with coffee, cake, and local foods. These are meaningful cultural experiences and an important part of the communities we visit.

Where can I track whale sightings?

You can use happywhale.com or the HappyWhale App, which works onboard and can be used with our Science Team.

Pre-Departure Webinars

Are webinars available for all voyages?

We host general destination pre-departure webinars rather than voyage-specific sessions. These are designed to prepare you for the environment, culture, and practicalities of your destination — and guests consistently find them one of the most useful steps in their pre-voyage preparation. All past webinars are recorded and available on our YouTube channel, and upcoming sessions are listed on our website. If you are looking for a webinar relevant to a specific region such as Arctic Canada, details of upcoming sessions are available through our website registration page.
